Introducing Headwaters Nest

Welcome to Kids in the Hills! The team at In the Hills magazine has been working to launch this new website for families living in the hills, and I’m so proud and excited to introduce the site, even in its infancy. Since Spring 2012, each quarterly issue of In the Hills magazine features a column by me, Bethany Lee. (That’s me in the photo!) I’m an Orangeville writer, business owner and mom…
Welcome to Kids in the Hills.ca! I’m so proud and excited to introduce this site to you, even as it is in its infancy.
Starting this spring, each quarterly issue of In the Hills magazine will now feature a column by me, Bethany Lee. (That’s me in the photo!) I’m an Orangeville writer, business owner and mom, and now, the Online Editor of this community resource. My column here and in the print magazine will be called Headwaters Nest, and I’ll reflect on the pleasures and challenges of family living in the hills.
When I was a new parent, I often felt that I wanted to connect with other moms and dads to find shops and services in our community and sometimes…I felt lost! It seemed that there was very little centralized information online (where, let’s face it, most of our research begins) for us parents living here “In the Hills”. An idea grew in my mind of developing an online community for parents, grandparents and caregivers. But alas, the early years with my son and work occupied my time to its fullest and while I plotted and planned, it took a while to make this a reality.
Five years later, I have had the wonderful opportunity of working with the In the Hills magazine team to revitalize the inthehills.ca website. This has brought me into a wonderful circle of people who are almost all parents and shared in my excitement to create this resource site.
I want this site to be a starting point for you when you are in need. Do you need information for your special needs child? Do you want to find out where you can buy organic products? Do you need to speak with a professional about your child’s birthday party? Look in our Shopping & Services listings for ideas on where to start. Do you want to share your experiences on living in the hills and the unique challenges it brings to the realm of parenting? Read our blogs and comment. We really do want to hear from you.
We will be adding fresh content every week, including events listings, tweets on kids’ happenings, contests and writing from local moms and dads. Our Shopping & Services will continue to grow.
A few special thank-you’s that I simply must give: a special thank you to Signe Ball, Kirsten Ball and Tony Maxwell for the long brainstorming sessions, support and straightforward thinking that has brought this site to where it is today. Thank you to Roberta Fracassi, Julie Lockyer and Jennifer Payne for their passion for this site and their abilities to make the community connections that we need to make the site a reality. Thank you to Gillian Gauthier – her wonderful photography and support has helped make this site truly lovely to look at! Thank you to our writers who will be helping fill this site with great info as our ‘baby’ grows!
Stayed tuned and stay in touch!
Yours,
Bethany Lee

I came across your website recently (linked there from someone on Facebook, I can’t quite recall who) and I have to say that I’m thrilled to finally see something like this for the Headwaters region! As a mother of 2 young kids, I am constantly searching for local information for myself and my children, and I’m glad to finally see ONE place where we’ll be able to find it all!
I very strongly that parents need to connect with other parents – many of us in the Headwaters region have moved up here from the city or other places, mostly because homes are so affordable, but as a result it seems that there are a lot of young families with few local connections. This can make the early days of parenting very difficult, without the proverbial “village” that it takes to raise a family by your side. Seeing sites like yours gets me excited – I think the more chances people are given to build that community and that village, the better off our entire region will be!
Congratulations on an excellent site!
